Imagine Cup 2010: Game Design Live Meeting

This live meeting was started on 1.00 – 2.00 PM yesterday, on 21 April 2010.
About 40 attendees in total.
I included, and summarized it in here in case you want to see some brief or some perspective from me. Anyway, you can always go to imagincup offical website and grab the recorded audio anytime.

Almost entire of the meeting, Andrew Parsons is the speaker.
I will give you summary as follows.
Note that the following is from my analysis of the voice of him, and
give some of my own expression into it.

First 30 minutes, he summarizes all the rules and regulation, and dos
or don’t for this round 2 game design. Content here, you already knew
it.
But from the speaking point of view, he tends to focus on the following topic.
- Fun factor
He said that this is going to be more intense in this round (as
compared to round 1). He stated that this criteria is the most crucial
to all users, if it’s fun to play your game would be spotted on !

- Audio
He said that this is also the important component of the game. He
stated that some games come to round 1 for judge without any sound.
His voice seems give the weight to this too.

- Theme
He also stated about how well the game can express the theme out.
Some games are really cool on graphics, and system, but cannot be able
to express theme so it’s sad that those team could not advance into
this round.

- Pre-existing sourcecode
The judges want to see what part of the game the team do by
themselves and what’s not, he said that this is not going to be mark
the team that used alot of pre-existing sourcecode or anything, but
the judges need to be able to identify the ability of the team and
what’s exactly the part that they do. (I think this point we are all
clear to pass on as we all do by ourselves, dont worry too much about
this topic.)

- Production Quality
He just need really up to par of game !

- At least one level !
His voice and the way of speaking tends to focus on just 1 completed
level. It’s like the judges teams may don’t really look at all levels
of the game, i think that they just see the first level or two then
assume others will comprise the same concept. Thus this is very
important topic, as if your game expresses the theme along the
progress of level, then you have to find the way to let them know and
look at other levels (may be via video or something, then back in the
game they will come and look).

- Weekly build
He suggests every teams to use the approach of weekly build of
software, and upload it quite frequently. Do not wait until last
minute !

-Equally on those 5 criteria
Those 5 criteria are all equally important. In fact, it’s the same
criteria as round 1.

- Fonts
Just use the standard fonts installed on Windows system (Verdana
comes out from his voice).

- Copyright
You (your team) own the game, so after this competition, you can
publish your game via XBox live, or find some publishers to release
your game. Microsoft doesn’t own or restrict anything. Only 1 game is
the example of this kind of action which continue to publish on XBox
live, i can’t remember the name of the game.

It’s that all.

Have a good luck on your game creation everyone !
